Enhancing Recovery with Injection-Based Therapies
At Reactivate Muskoka, we offer advanced, evidence-based injection therapies to help reduce pain, promote healing, and improve mobility. While these injections can be effective on their own, we recognize that true, lasting recovery often requires addressing the underlying causes of pain and dysfunction.
That’s why we take a holistic approach, integrating injection-based treatments with acupuncture, shockwave therapy, chiropractic adjustments, exercise-based rehabilitation, massage therapy, and mobility work to support your body’s healing process from every angle.

What Is Prolotherapy?
Prolotherapy is a type of injection treatment that helps the body repair weak or injured ligaments, tendons, and joints.
It uses a sugar-based solution (usually dextrose) that is injected into the sore area. This causes a mild inflammation, which helps trigger your body’s natural healing process.
Your body then starts making more collagen and connective tissue to make the area stronger and more stable.
What Does Prolotherapy Treat?
Prolotherapy is used to treat pain and weakness in:
Kneecap tendon problems (Patellar tendinopathy)
Rotator cuff injuries (shoulder tendon tears)
Tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow (epicondylitis)
Heel pain (Plantar fasciopathy)
Achilles tendon injuries
How Does It Work?
Prolotherapy is usually done around tendons or ligaments that have become loose or damaged.
The sugar solution tells your body, “Hey, this area needs fixing!” Your body responds by sending healing cells to the area and possibly releasing special growth factors to build new tissue.
Once the area becomes stronger, the pain often goes away because the body no longer sees it as damaged.
Most people need 6 to 8 treatments to become pain-free. These can be done every week or once a month, depending on the case.
How Is the Injection Done?
The doctor mixes glucose with lidocaine (a freezing medicine).
The area is cleaned with alcohol to prevent infection.
The doctor injects the solution near the injured tissue.
This process is repeated over several weeks, usually between 4 to 8 times.
What Should You Expect After the Injection?
You might feel stiff or sore for a few days.
You should keep doing your everyday activities, but don’t do anything extra like heavy lifting or intense exercise.
This gives the treatment time to work into the tissues and start healing.
There's a very low risk of infection (about 1 in 300,000) because a needle goes through the skin. But don’t worry — the area is cleaned very well before the injection.
What Can Make Prolotherapy Work Even Better?
Since Prolotherapy helps the body repair itself, it works best when paired with other treatments that support joint health and movement, like:
Shockwave Therapy
This treatment uses sound waves to:
Break up old scar tissue
Increase blood flow to help healing
Exercise Therapy
Once the injured area is healing, we help you:
Build strength
Improve balance and stability to stop the injury from coming back
Chiropractic Care & Mobility Work
Helps make sure your joints are moving the right way so that the new tissue can work properly and stay healthy.
